Obituary for Reverend William "Gene" Hancock

The Reverend William Eugene “Gene” Hancock, 88, of Collinsville, passed away Sunday, January 7, 2018. Son of Roy and Ruth Hancock, Gene was born on November 3, 1929, in Oglesby, OK, and spent most of his early life in the Tiawah—Claremore community.

Gene graduated from Cook School for Christian Leadership and Seminary in Phoenix, Arizona, received a BA from Cameron University, and graduated from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University. Gene joined the Oklahoma United Methodist Conference in 1957, serving over 50 years in Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, and Arizona. Gene loved and served numerous United Methodist congregations, ministering to thousands. He was particularly passionate in his service to the elderly and Native Americans, largely inspired by his father-in-law, Pastor Edgar Tims of the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference. Gene completed six seasons of ministerial education in the Oklahoma Indian Mission of the United Methodist Church, preaching at all the churches on the Navajo Reservation in Arizona and several times to migrant workers. In addition to his pastoral work, Gene served two separate terms as District Superintendent in the Southeast and Northeast Districts of Oklahoma. He was appointed by Bishop William A. Smith to the Ada Indian Church in 1961, where he doubled the membership in one year. In his free time, Gene enjoyed raising parakeets and rabbits, doing wood-working, and smoking his pipe.

Gene is survived by his loving wife and partner in ministry, Ruth Okemah Hancock, who he married on May 13, 1954, and by his four children with Ruth, Karen Keady, Eddie Hancock, David Hancock, and Shawn Hancock. Gene is also survived by two children, Roy Hancock and Melinda Palmisano, from a previous marriage. He will be dearly missed by his 19 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 3 sisters and 2 brothers: Lorene Chaney, Doris Adams, and Grace Lobermier, James A. Hancock, and James R. “Chipper” Hancock.

Viewing will be held from 3-8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Dighton-Moore Funeral Service, 116 N. Main Street, Owasso, Oklahoma 74055. Services will be held at Christ United Methodist Church in Claremore, OK, at 2 pm on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 with burial to follow at Graceland Cemetery in Owasso, Oklahoma.
