Obituary for Danny Lane Williams

Danny Lane Williams of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, passed on from this life surrounded by his family on April 19, 2018. He was born September 13, 1947, in Fort Smith, Arkansas, to Dixie Wayne and Era Anne (Hendershot) Williams. After a childhood spent in the Tulsa area and in western Oklahoma, Danny studied education at Northeastern State College (now University), earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

On August 11, 1973, Danny married his childhood sweetheart, Arlene. A devoted husband and a caring father, one of his proudest accomplishments was visiting all 50 U.S. states with her and sharing that wanderlust with their four children. Hiking the Grand Canyon and the Appalachian Trail, exploring peaceful Sedona, riding bicycles along the Florida coastline, and rafting the turbulent Royal Gorge were among favorite moments he shared with his family. No moment was so insignificant that an adventure could not be found. Toward the end of his life, he enjoyed hiking local trails and flashlight bear hunts with his grandchildren.

He retired in 2012, formally ending a 40+ year career that spanned both private and public education. His brilliance in the classroom as a history, social science, and applied economics teacher was recognized by numerous local and state teaching awards. He established a local private school that continues to thrive today, guided athletes to college scholarships as a wrestling coach at his alma mater, McLain High School, and built and facilitated Oklahoma’s first high-element high school ropes course program. Danny’s career culminated in a position as district-wide Student Assistance Programs Coordinator at Union Public Schools. In that role, he established and saw flourish a number of programs that impacted area students and families – among them, Drug-Free Youth of Union, the ICare holiday gift project, parent-student interventions, and a great many others.

Yet for Danny, life and the world were the ultimate classrooms, and he taught not for pay but from passion. That passion found its purest form in the unbounded sphere of his personal life and faith. He was a confidant and counselor to scores of church youth, mentorship that expressed itself through coaching and outdoor adventures. Upon taking over the volleyball program at his church, he read a book to learn the sport, then molded inexperienced boys’ and girls’ teams into a powerhouse program that routinely won tournaments against elite private school teams. Long a lover of travel and the outdoors, he led youth in rappelling cliffs, arduous hikes, midnight bike rides, and camping trips.

In all these things, Danny shared his genuine faith in Christ, and his guiding belief that each individual deserves dignity, opportunity, and embrace. A humble and prodigious giver, he gave much to the world.

Danny is survived by his wife, Arlene Williams; two sons, Daniel Williams, LT USN, of Washington, D.C., and David Williams of Tulsa, Oklahoma; two daughters, Amy Carpenter and husband DJ of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Angela Lindstrom of Tulsa, Oklahoma; six grandchildren, Eden, Lake, Isabella, Lane, Elena, and Clover; one sister, Judy Braswell and husband Oliver of Tulsa, Oklahoma; three brothers-in-law, Larry Williams and wife Loretta of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Michael Williams and wife Patricia of Harrisburg, Missouri, and Dexter Williams and wife Susie of Kansas City, Missouri; and one sister-in-law, Elaine Fitzwilliam of Kansas City, Missouri; along with many nieces and nephews, much extended family, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother and fellow adventurer Robert Williams.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel, 5111 S. Memorial Drive, Tulsa, Oklahoma 74145.
